Bromsgrove Newsletter – Sep 15 2011

Dear Member

At our last meeting, our “mop”, Sajid Javid spoke to us about his life, starting with his education at school and university, followed by a career in banking, where he achieved success by becoming the youngest vice-president in the Chase Manhatten Bank in New York. This gave him a broader background when he decided to move into a political career.

He then spoke about his three lives, as an MP in the House Of Commons; his Constituency work in Bromsgrove and his home life ith his young family.  Answered several questions from the members.

Best wishes

Jenny Hall - Vice Chairman

NOTICES

1/ Photographs

If you have taken photographs when you have been on U3A outings this year, please could you let Vic McLoughlin have some copies so that he can put together a rolling slide show during our Christmas Party. Please do it soon so that it won’t be a last minute rush. Talk to Vic about te format of your pictures so that he knows the best way of putting them all together.

2/ Outings

2011

Thursday 29th September - Day in Cambridge

Monday 31st October - The Globe Theatre

Tuesday 6th December - Aston Hall y Candlelight

2012

Tuesday 27th March - Houses of Parliament

Tuesday 17th July - Durham/Beamish Museum/York break

3/ Calligraphy

As we can no longer use the Amphlett Hall the September meeting is cancelled. I feel the group is flagging now, after an enjoyable couple of years. If we meet at my house in the future, number will be restricted - three would be comfortable, four a squash! If there is enthsiasm to continue we need a new venue with space and tables.

4/ Giving and accepting Lifts

Several members have spoken to me about being given lifts by other members to various venues. Although many people can reciprocte there are many who cannot. Drivers are usually happy to take people “as they were going anyway”, but passengers would like to put something towards fuel costs. So if your passengers want to put a pound or two onto your dashboard, PLEASE accept graciously!

5/ REMINDERS

Name badges – Please wear your new one as soon as you get it.

A row of seats is reserved for newer members who feel they want to talk to others. This can now be found behind the visitors and chaperones row.

For those with hearing aids – there is a loop system in the hall. Turn to T.
